November Pit Firing
OFFSITE WORKSHOP
Join us in exploring one of the most ancient ceramic firing techniques: pit firing. Using natural and found materials, works are placed directly into the earth for firing. This process is a collaboration between the artist and chance — balancing experimentation, observation, and discovery. In pit firing, unpredictability is embraced, and failures are considered an essential part of learning.
Each work unearthed from the ashes is uniquely marked by the elements, capturing the beauty and unpredictability of nature itself.
The studio will provide a selection of found materials, including sawdust, seaweed, soil, copper carbonate, and more, to create surface texture and variation.
Please note: This is a two-part event. The first session will cover the pit-firing process, and the second will take place offsite for the firing itself. The offsite location is approximately a 1.5-hour drive from the studio. Location is confirmed the week of the firings; the weather and wind report will determine where it is safe to fire. Carpooling is highly recommended. The exact location will be shared during the informational meeting. All work must be bisque fired before the pit firing.
Attendance Options
Option 1: One-Day Attendance
Thursday, November 19th, Wrapping Pieces
Wrap your work in materials and learn about what materials create different colors. Your work can still be fired if you’re unable to attend the offsite firing. If you cannot make the commute, please select this option.
Option 2: Two-Day Attendance
Thursday, November 19th & Sunday, November 22nd
For those who wish to participate onsite in the pit firing. Build the fire, fire the work, and unearth finished pieces.
BBQ and potlock to follow.
Location: The firing site will be disclosed after registration and is located within approximately a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles. If high winds are forecasted, the firing may be rescheduled, as weather conditions will determine the timing and safety of the event. Safety is of the utmost importance.
