Membership Guidelines

Thank you for being part of the studio! To help keep our space organized and welcoming for everyone, we kindly ask that you take a moment to review the information below.

As a shared co-working space, we ask that all members, guests, and students follow the guidelines provided. If you are a member please review the membership guideline pdf attached to your email. Doing so helps everything run smoothly and ensures a positive experience for both our lab technicians and fellow members.

See tabs below for any common questions or concerns.

  • All membership sign-ups must be completed in person. This allows us to ensure the studio is the right fit for you, provide your door code, show you where pieces should be placed for firing, and get you fully set up to begin working in the space.

Please feel free to book a studio tour using the link in the membership options. This will sync with our calendar and notify us of your visit. When we meet, we'll help you select the membership plan that best aligns with your needs.

If you have a special project in mind, this also allows us to guide you in the right direction. 🙂

  • All fired work must be collected within 60 days of firing. Any items not retrieved within this timeframe will be discarded.

All pieces must be clearly labeled or signed. Due to the large volume of work in circulation, this helps ensure your pieces are properly tracked. The studio is not responsible for identifying or storing unsigned work.

Clay CA assumes no responsibility for any unclaimed, misplaced, or discarded items.

  • Studio members are welcome to bring friends and family into the studio to visit. Guests who want to work alongside you and use the studio facilities can do so with a Guest Pass.

    • 1 reclaim clay bag is included with the Guest Pass
    • All other clays must be purchased separately
    • Guest Passes are paid via Square
    • Members will be charged a fee if a guest uses the studio without purchasing a pass. Please make sure your guests are set up before they start working
  • Members, please label your tools and clay with your name or store them on your assigned shelf to help prevent lost or misplaced items. The studio is not responsible for missing items.

  • In short yes — however if you are using outside clay bodies or glazes, please check with a staff member first to ensure they are safe to use and rated for Cone 5 or higher (not Cone 05). Incompatible materials can cause damage to both work and kilns. When in doubt, always consult a staff member before firing. If you are interested in a special firing please inquire within.

  • For the safety of everyone the kiln room is for lab technicians only. Members are not permitted to enter the kiln room or tamper with the kilns under any circumstances. If you have questions about a firing, please speak with a staff member.

  • If the volume of work you create in a month exceeds your membership or firing capacity, you have several options:

    • Pay an additional fee per pound based on the weight of your pieces
    • Rent an entire kiln if you have a large volume of work
    • If you consistently produce a large volume of work, consider upgrading your membership or adding an additional shelf or sculpture space
  • We bisque and glaze fire daily; however, as this is a shared studio space, the volume of work can fluctuate, especially during holiday seasons when gifts or items are needed quickly. Based on experience with deadlines and commissions, we highly recommend starting pieces 4–6 weeks in advance to account for slow drying, bisque firings, potential breakage, and shipping delays.

Any work needed in less than 10 days is considered a rush order, additional fees may apply for firing. Please note that during peak holiday seasons, the studio experiences higher-than-usual volumes of work. Thank you for your patience!

  • We'll be sad to see you go, but we understand life is upon us. A few things to keep in mind if you decide to cancel your membership:

    • Memberships are non-prorated. Cancellations take effect at the end of your current billing period.
    • Upon cancellation, members have a 5-day grace period to clear out their shelf and collect all personal belongings
    • Any remaining work left to fire will have a 30 day grace period to pick up on the pick up carts.
    • Any items remaining on your shelf after 5 days will be discarded
    • Please make sure to pick up your work within these time frames, as we would hate to see it discarded.

If you have questions about your membership or cancellation, please reach out to us at clay@clayca.com.
