LUSTER FIRING
Regular price
$30.00
We offer luster firings once a month, on the second Wednesday of each month.
Before Your Luster Firing
- All work must be fully glaze-fired before luster is applied.
- Luster firings are fired to Cone 019.
- Cone 019 is a low-temperature firing that is compatible with lusters, decals, and photographic decals.
- Please make sure your glaze-fired work is clean and free of dust before applying luster.
019 Firing Tips
- Luster and decals react with the glaze underneath them. The final result can vary depending on the glaze surface and color.
- In general, gold luster tends to respond well over yellow-toned glazes, while silver luster tends to respond well over white or grey glazes.
- Photographic decals may become brighter or more saturated after firing.
- Because Cone 019 is a very low-temperature firing, refiring a piece at a higher temperature can burn out or alter the luster. Please consider the final glaze and firing schedule before applying luster.
Luster Application & Safety
- Luster must be applied outdoors or in the designated luster application area, according to studio guidelines.
- Always wear appropriate gloves and respiratory protection when applying luster.
- Luster products contain solvents and other chemicals that require careful handling. Always read and follow the manufacturer's label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions for the specific product you are using.
- Keep luster containers closed when not in use and avoid unnecessary exposure to fumes and vapors.
- Do not apply luster near food, beverages, or other studio materials that could become contaminated.
- To minimize fumes and dust in the studio, we recommend applying luster the evening before the firing or the morning of the firing, allowing adequate time for the work to be handled and fired safely.
Luster Firing Fees
Luster firings are separate from studio membership and are charged at the same rate as our outside firing services.
- $30 flat rate for a firing covering up to 10 lbs of work.
- For firings over 10 lbs, the entire firing is charged at $5 per pound.
- Weight is calculated based on the total combined weight of all work included in the firing.
Example:
- 8 lbs = $30
- 10 lbs = $30
- 12 lbs = $60
- 15 lbs = $75
